Aero Tech Waterproof Breathable Rainwear - Technical Cycling Jacket with zip off Hood

big man's rain jacketWaterproof/Breathable  Rainwear is the gear of choice for active cyclists.  There are several different brands of Waterproof/Breathable films like Gore-Tex® or eVent® and many others. When this type of fabric first came out there was only one brand with name recognition and that was Gore-Tex® However, now there are many choices that might fall into the "generic" category with all the same high performance properties but without the branded markings.

Highly effective rain gear like this one has two rain barriers build into the material design. The process to create the waterproof fabric in this rainwear starts with a tightly woven polyester fabric that has been treated on the surface with a DWR or Durable Water Resistant finish.  This finish helps water to bead up on the surface of the fabric.  It is a coating.  That treated polyester fabric is then laminated to a waterproof breathable membrane.  The laminated membrane is composed of an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, polyurethane (PU) or polyester membrane.  It looks like a plastic film with microscopic ventilation that allows water vapor from perspiration to push through to the outer fabric (wicking) for evaporation.  cycling rain jacket fabric is 3 layers

Waterproof breathable laminates like Gore-Tex® PacLite®; eVent®; MemBrain® Dry.Q® are highly technical in their composition because they allow water perspiration vapor from the body to escape into the outer layers for evaporation.  While they are all breathable, they are essentially the same in their component parts.  There is no comparative test or mechanical measurement for testing performance for this type of material.  Aero Tech does abrasion testing (martindale) on the fabric surface, and tests the coating of DWR but there is no standard for comparison between waterproof breathable laminates.  They all have about the same properties and deliver similar results.

Features of this Rainwear:

Zipper off Hood:  This jacket has a removable hood that fits nice and snug for insulation and so that it can be worn under a cycling helmet.  It has a wide, stiff brim that keeps some air space above the eyes to keep some of the rain off your face.

Seam Sealing: All of the seams on this waterproof breathable jacket are taped to seal out tiny puncture holes from the stitching.  The highest quality narrow seam tape on this jacket keeps the seams soft and pliable with no discernible difference in the fabric between seams and body.

Technical Additions:  The extra convenience you get from these added features are so worth the bit of extra cost because they add to the ease of comfort.

Velcro wrist closures.  This adjusts the sleeve length to your unique fit.  It also enables you to pull down the jacket over your fingers when it is very cold and wet outside.

Five zippered pockets to stow your stuff. The back pocket is big and roomy for all the stuff you will need to carry on your activity.

Media Port - the chest pocket has a port for your wires.

Storm Rain Flap - The back of this rainwear has a flap that snaps up or down to cover the rear during a storm.

Adjustable Fit - The hem of the jacket has two shock cords to adjust the tightness around the hip area to seal out rain and cold air.

Lining - Those aiming to save space and weight should choose a 3- or 2.5-layer design (described above).

* Zipper Garage - This jackets has a covering flap at the top of the front zipper so nothing touches your chin.

* Zipper Lining - It stops wind from slipping through the teeth of the zipper.

* Storm flap - The back of this rainwear has a flap that snaps up or down to cover the rear during a storm.

Reflective Trims - Front and back and on all sides of the body for a 360 view of reflective in low light conditions.

    Awesome Product

Great for brisk race mornings. The button up rear flap is a game changer. Over all a great product and does exactly what it says it does. The removable hood is a nice touch. Minimal logos, not to flashy. Very nice stuff. Buy one!!

    Effective in heavy rain

Like all rain jackets, breathability is reduced. That said, this well-fitting jacket keeps you dry even in a downpour. The hood used as a helmet liner also keeps water off your head and even (to a large extent) out of your eyes.

    Great rain jacket

Posted by Neil on Jul 7th 2016

I use the jacket during a 30 min commute to/from work and have found it comfortable in sizing and it keeps me nice and dry in moderate rain. I haven't used it during heavy rain but expect it will still keep me nice and dry. I don't use the detachable hood as I tend to overheat pretty easily. I've used it in temperatures 4 - 15 deg C and need to unzip at the warmer temperatures to prevent overheating. Underarm vents would go a long way to helping keep the overheating under control. A great rain jacket for cooler temperatures but I don't think I'll be able to use it at warmer temperatures.

    Good value for the money

Well made and light weight. Great for use during light rain and wind breaker. When using the hood under a bike helmet, there was not enough length in the hood to wear comfortably. When I look down or to the side, it pulls on the jacket lifting the shoulders. Also, the collar is loose around the neck and doesn't come up very high so its possible for a small amount of rain to run down face and neck, going under the jacket.

Let me start by saying this is the only product from Aerotech Designs that I have found to be disappointing. I own a number of items that I love and wear daily and whenever possible I promote their products to other riders. This jacket however is not on par with the rest of their gear. I ordered the medium based on the sizing chart but when it arrived it was way to small. I was not able to put the hood up and stand up straight let alone get into a riding position so I sent it back (+$10 return shipping) and asked for a Large. The large was hardly any better. It is much wider than it is long and as a result leaves a bunch of extra material around my sides and not enough down my front. The main zipper gets stuck in several places including the very top which makes for unzipping while in the saddle near impossible. It doesn't breath at all which I was expecting but when you add in the fact that the zipper sticks it makes it that much worse because you cant vent it out at all. The material seems flimsy and is very noisy. It crinkles like a dull bag of chips and the reflective material is already starting to flake off even though I've only worn it in the rain a handful of times. The only thing I really like about this jacket is the back flap that you can unbutton to cover more of your bum when you're in the riding position. I was looking for a nice rain jacket for all this El Nino rain we've been getting in California but this jacket was not worth the money that I spent. Disappointing.

    It Fits!

Posted by Tom on Jan 20th 2016

I'm now retired and just getting back into cycling, with that I'm finding that the sizing for most cycling apparel out there does not come close to matching USA sizing. My main problem is with jerseys and jackets. With a chest size of 48", I normally wear a 2XL, but it's hard to find manufacturers that make quality jerseys and jackets for bigger men. This was my first purchase from Aero Tech and I must say this 2XL jacket I ordered actually fit and was of great quality. I'll be coming back to Aero Tech.
