This fabric does an excellent job at the disruption of ultraviolet light. The fabric is woven with advanced nylon micro fibers that have a hydrogen and carbon based benzene ring in the polymer. The fibers are extruded and coated before being spun into yarns.All fabrics will protect from the sun's
UV radiation to some extent. The type of fabric that does the best job at blocking harmful sun rays will carry a Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating from 15 (good) to 50+(excellent).
Wetness: The desire to keep out the sun's UV rays is reduced by
wetness on the fabric. A wet fabric may cause the sun blocking to be reduced by up to half its effectiveness as dry. Keeping the fabric dry is enhanced by the durable water resistant finish. The DWR finish creates a fabric that is lightweight and hydrophobic. The dense, tight woven microfibers minimize the space between yarns. This reduces the amount of UV light that can pass through which leads to the 50 UPV score.
Stay Dry! Durable Water Repellent Finish (DWR)
This dress shirt is stitched with a fabric that has a permanent DWR finish that makes the material hydrophobic. You wil benefit from this finish as it stays dry in moist conditions. The extruded microfibers are treated before being spun into yard. The coated fibers are then woven into the plaid fabric. The DWR coating does not reduce or affect the breath-ability of the technical fabric because the woven fibers have a space between them for breath-ability. To test the effectiveness of a DWR finish, you can pour some water onto the garment and see how much water is sticking to the fabric. The quality testing for this finish is superior up to 50 washings. Repeated laundering eventually will diminish the effectiveness of the DWR.

50+ Ultraviolet Sun Protection Factor (UPF)
UPF vs SPF
Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is a rating system used for apparel. In terms of sun protection, fabric is graded on a scale (UPF). This measures the transmission of light/radiation through the fibers of a fabric or cloth. 50+ is the highest rating and would allow less than 97.5 % of UV radiation.
UVA/UVB or UV Resistivity is a different metric that represents the ability of a fabric to resist fading due to exposure (sun bleaching). This can be tested by using the ASTM standard of a transmission test, laundered forty times then exposed to 100 hrs of UV light then tested a second time. The variance of colors makes it hard to estimate the UPF without a scientific test where UV light is transmitted through the fabric and measured by a radiation measuring instrument like a pectrophotometer or the use of a spectroradiometer. Both polyester and nylon do a great job disrupting Ultraviolet light. This is beccause there are hydrogen and carbon based benzene rings within the polymer before it is extruded into a fiber for fabric. The treatment is a chemical UV absorber (either in polymer of extruded fiber or as a finish on exterior of a textile) that prevent the UVA and UVB rays from reaching your skin. Natural fibers are less effective at blocking the damage of ultraviolet light. Highly protective clothing have these qualities:
* Tight woven fabric like microfiber
* Usually darker in color, not usually white
* Chemically treated with UV absorber
Sun Protection Factor (SPF) Usually related to sunscreens. The SPF factor is a measure of the time it would take for your skin to get sunburned. Sunscreen lotions are graded on a completely different scale (SPF) and doesn't correlate directly to the UPF. You would need to compare the actual percentages of light/radiation transmitted. Also, The percentage of burning UV rays that a lotion/cream product blocks does not increase proportionally with the SPF value. Sunscreens with higher SPF ratings block slightly more UVB rays, but none offers 100% protection.
