6 Helpful Apps for Cyclists to Use

Strava

Let’s just get this one out of the way. Most people know it, and use it. Strava is a great way to track and map your rides. You can find your riding buddies and make mini competitions with them. You can join a “Strava Club” to meet new people to ride with. Definitely one of the best, if not the best cycling app out there.

MTB Project

MTB Project is perfect when you’re looking for a new trail. If you travel a lot with your mountain bike, this app is a must have. You can track your rides, and even rate the trails so other users can get an idea of what to expect. It’s very easy to use, and helpful.

MyUSAC

Not the most sophisticated app, but it does function well. The MyUSAC app is essential if you hold a USAC license, and plan on doing any racing. The best feature of this app is to manage your event schedule. You can find local races. Another nice thing is you can access your license from the app which makes registering at races a little easier.

Myfitnesspal

Looking to lose weight? Myfitnesspal is a great way to track caloric intake, macros, and exercise. The food diary has almost anything you eat in it already, so tracking calories is simple. They provide helpful graphs to show your macros, which lets you know if your diet includes too many carbs. If you go to the gym you can add calories burned to you net total calorie tracking which will let you know how you did that day. Losing weight is easy when you know how much is going in.

Cyclemeter

Cyclemeter turns your phone into a bike computer. It’s helpful if you buy a handlebar mount for your phone so you can see all the output and maps while you ride. You can track your speed, distance, maps, and calories burned. You can save your ride and collect data over time like average speed and elevation gains. All of this is available in the free edition, and the paid (9.99/year) unlocks even more functionality.

First Aid by American Red Cross

You never know when an accident may occur, so it’s best to always be prepared. This app shows you how to take care of most emergency situations. It’s valuable info that is worth a read. They cover many different emergencies, and a crash on your bicycle may lead to many of them. It also has a hospital locator that can be very helpful if you’re riding in a new location. It’s better to be prepared.

Honorable mention

CycleCast and Peloton

Looking for a way to make using the trainer in the winter more interesting? We lumped these two apps into this category. These apps offer coaching, videos, music, and routines to make you get the most out of your indoor workout. Only downside – these apps aren’t free. They are subscription base, and for this they don’t make the list. The idea is awesome, but why pay when there is YouTube?
