Aero Tech Tall Mans's Waterproof Breathable Rainwear - Technical Cycling Jacket with zip off Hood

extra long tall man's rain jacketTall Rain jacket is Windproof, Waterproof and Breathable.  Great Rain gear for men who need extra length in the torsoe and arms.  Tall sized is extra long.

Rainwear is the gear of choice for active cyclists.  There are several different brands of Waterproof/Breathable films like Gore-Tex® or eVent® and many others. When this type of fabric first came out there was only one brand with name recognition and that was Gore-Tex®. However, now there are many choices that might fall into the "generic" category with all the same high performance properties but without the branded markings.

Keeping dry in a downpour is not easy unless you take the extra steps to create a barrier between you and the water.  Highly effective rain gear like this one has two rain barriers build into the material design. The process to create the waterproof fabric in this rainwear starts with a tightly woven polyester fabric that has been treated on the surface with a DWR or Durable Water Resistant finish.  This finish helps water to bead up on the surface of the fabric.  It is a coating.  That treated polyester fabric is then laminated to a waterproof breathable membrane.  The laminated membrane is composed of an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene, polyurethane (PU) or polyester membrane.  It looks like a plastic film with microscopic ventilation that allows water vapor from perspiration to push through to the outer fabric (wicking) for evaporation. cycling rain jacket fabric is 3 layers

Waterproof breathable laminates are membranes that look like a thin rubber skin.  Popular brands include Gore-Tex® PacLite®; eVent®; MemBrain® Dry.Q® are highly technical in their composition because they allow water perspiration vapor from the body to escape into the outer layers for evaporation.  While they are all breathable, they are essentially the same in their component parts.  There is no comparative test or mechanical measurement for testing performance for this type of material.

Aero Tech does abrasion testing (martindale) on the fabric surface, and tests the coating of DWR but there is no standard for comparison between waterproof breathable laminates.  They all have about the same properties and deliver similar results.

Main features of this Rainwear:

Zipper off Hood:  This jacket has a removable hood that fits nice and snug for insulation and so that it can be worn under a cycling helmet.  It has a wide, stiff brim that keeps some air space above the eyes to keep some of the rain off your face.

Seam Sealing: All of the seams on this waterproof breathable jacket are taped to seal out tiny puncture holes from the stitching.  The highest quality narrow seam tape on this jacket keeps the seams soft and pliable with no discernible difference in the fabric between seams and body.

Technical Additions:  The extra convenience you get from these added features are so worth the bit of extra cost because they add to the ease of comfort.

Additional features:

    • Velcro wrist closures.  This adjusts the sleeve length to your unique fit.  It also enables you to pull down the jacket over your fingers when it is very cold and wet outside.
    • Five zippered pockets to stow your stuff. The back pocket is big and roomy for all the stuff you will need to carry on your activity.
    • Media Port - The chest pocket has a headphone port for your wires.
    • Storm Rain Flap - The back of this rainwear has a flap that snaps up or down to cover the rear during a storm.
    • Adjustable Fit - The hem of the jacket has two shock cords to adjust the tightness around the hip area to seal out rain and cold air.
    • Lining - Those aiming to save space and weight should choose a 3- or 2.5-layer design (described above).
    • Zipper Garage - This jackets has a covering flap at the top of the front zipper so nothing touches your chin.
    • Zipper Lining - It stops wind from slipping through the teeth of the zipper.
    • Storm flap - The back of this rainwear has a flap that snaps up or down to cover the rear during a storm
    • Reflective Trims - Front and back and on all sides of the body for a 360 view of reflective in low light conditions.

    Okay but....

Posted by Fldaves on Jan 5th 2016

It's too loose fitting and really just too heavy and having worn it now on a few "cold" rides it also doesn't seem to wick moisture at all very well. It is however a well made jacket, it's just not well suited for use as my cycling jacket.

    Great Jacket!

First jacket that actually fits me cycling. I am 6'7" and most jackets I buy fit like a giant sail. This jacket is really long trim and fits great.

    A fantastic product

Posted by Blaxas on Feb 24th 2015

I was looking to replace a well worn wind jacket. This product is ideal for cool mornings <10 degrees celcius it's a great wind stopping jacket. At higher intensity the breathability stuggles but being warm makes things tolerable. It doesn't pack down very well when you have to take it off. The size though is fantastic at 6'7" 130kg with long arms it is very rare to find something that fits thi

I am 6'6 and it is great to finally have a lightweight reflective jacket that is long enough. It is very comfortable.

This jacket was monstrous. I am 6'4" and weigh in at about 300 lbs. So no shrinking violet. I chose the 4xl jacket mainly because I don't usually fit into 3xl jackets. The jacket was really big and it made me look tiny. Make sure if you buy this jacket you are BIG.

    First impressions

Posted by Don't talk abou on Jul 16th 2014

I purchased this as a jacket for cool mornings in the British summer. My first impression is that it is a good length but is a tight fit around the waist. The illuminate sleeves have a plastic clammy feel if you wear a short sleeve jersey underneath. I will update my review after I have had a few rides wearing it but it may have to be reserved for the cooler autumn days.

    Sharp looking jacket

Posted by Kelly M. on Apr 25th 2014

I bought this for my husband who is 6'9" and all torso. It is the first garment we have ever bought that is absolutely long enough in every dimension. There is extra length in the sleeves! He can actually use the thumb holes.||I bought a large. He has about a 42" chest. The sizing seems true. The jacket seems to be very well made. We're living in Northern California so the jacket hasn't be

    Excellent Jacket

Posted by Cyclezilla on Feb 21st 2014

I'm 6'1" with a long torso and finding jerseys and jackets is always a chore. ATD always has the size married to the quality I'm looking for. This jacket is warm, comfy, and keeps me dry on these cold, wet winter WA days.
